Leg #2 and Recovery Update

10/25/20251 min read

Another update from me but this time from our living room instead of the settee of the boat!

Race-wise, it is now day 4 of the leg 2 from Punta to Cape Town. If you have been checking the race tracker, you would have seen that Washington DC went further South than the rest of the fleet. Their idea is clearly to get more solid wind for downwind sailing to South Africa. So far it is working quite well. They are 4th position and if the option south works out they should get a speed advantage on the other boats further north. Let’s cross fingers for them. They did the first 3 days sailing upwind so back to life at 45 degree angle for the crew and lots of water to pump out of the bilges. So these were not the most relaxing sailing conditions. It is also getting quite cold and multiple layers and foulies are now the norm (to be honest I still believe that it is better than the exhausting humid heat of the doldrums).

On my side here, it has been now 3.5 weeks since I injured myself. I am getting better and I can pretty much have a normal life. It is still a bit painful when I sleep (if I move around, I wake up) as I have a pain point in the back and one in the front of my rib cage. But everyday is becoming easier. A funny thing though is that I still sleep in chunks of 4 to 5 hours and wake up in the middle of the night, as if I were ready to start my watch on deck.

Utami and I are going next week to Thailand to meet our nieces (they had planned a trip which I can now join) so I will continue to heal over there before hopefully returning for leg 3 mid November in Cape Town.

We have a call tomorrow . I hope to see you there.

Take care!
